Winners of the 13th Hong Kong Jewelry Design Competition were announced today ahead of the 29th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, which opens February 16. There were 300 entries for this competition all of which were judged on creativity, innovation, aesthetics and craftsmanship, along with the ability to market and wear the item, and topic relevance. For this year, both the "Open Group" and "Student Group" categories competed under a "Soaring Dragon" theme, echoing the Chinese Year of the Dragon.

Three entries in the Open Group were honored with Best of Show, including the "Interstellar Dream" ring, pictured, which was created by Ho Kwan Po and sponsored by H&F International Jewellery Co. Ltd.; the "Soaring Dragon" ring by Cherry Ko, which was sponsored by 3D-Gold Jewellery (HK) Ltd.; and "Flying Dragon in Joy" brooch by Tse Ka Wing and sponsored by Luk Fook Holdings.
Ngan Ka Yi, from the School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University, was named Student Group champion for her "Gaming Fire Dragon" necklace, with detachable pendant, and she also won the craftsmanship and technology award.
Another student entry, "Black Shadow," won first runner-up and featured a pair of somber-toned dragon earrings by Wong Nga Kok, who is from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (HKIVE). The second runner-up, Tang Yuk Ying, who is also from HKIVE, was honored for her "Dragon Posture" ring.
The competition was organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association, the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China.
The Hong Kong show is expecting 3,100 exhibitors from 48 countries, up from 2,870 exhibitors in 2011, and plans to host 20 special events.
