New exhibit: The Origins and Impact of Jewelry

By Jeff Miller  http://www.diamonds.net

RAPAPORT... The Bruce Museum, in Greenwich, Connecticut, will open a new exhibit on July 16, 2011, titled ''Bijoux: The Origins and Impact of Jewelry.''  The exhibit features  different types of jewelry along with samples of minerals, precious stones and other materials used in the art of jewelry making.

Bijoux: The Origins and Impact of Jewelry investigates  the ingenuity of artists to create adornment from a host of materials, and delves into the genesis of these natural materials and investigates the economic and environmental impact of a universal attraction to wearing diamonds and gems.

In this “age of sustainability,” jewelry artists are now experimenting with both new and long forgotten materials and techniques. This trend is pushing the envelope in jewelry design and has set the stage for a renewed appreciation for the intimacy between art and science.

The Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive in Greenwich. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and free for children under five and Bruce Museum members. Admission is free to all on Tuesdays. Bijoux closes on February 26, 2012.

The exhibition was organized by Gina Gould, the Bruce Museum curator of science, and supported by Betteridge Jewelers, the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund, Anne and Fred Elser, and Hank and Meryl Silverstein.
