North Carolina retailer Ellis Jewelers has chosen the winners of its first future jewelry designer contest, which challenged students to sketch out an original ring or pendant design.

Dan Levinson, center, owner of Ellis Jewelers, stands with Gracie Brown (left) and Michelle Mills (right), who won the jeweler’s inaugural future jewelry designer contest.
The students competed in two groups: elementary school children in grades 3 to 5, and high school students in grades 9 to 12. A winner from each group had the privilege of seeing their design made into a piece of jewelry by Ellis’ jewelers.
Winner Gracie Brown, a fourth grader from Furr Elementary, received a custom-made pendant patterned after her jewelry design (below).

Tenth-grader Michelle Mills from Concord High School received a white gold diamond and emerald ring modeled after her design. (below).

“This contest was developed to spark the creative spirit in our community’s children,” Ellis Jewelers owner Dan Levinson said. “Our entire team was thrilled to see the look on both Gracie and Michelle’s faces when we presented them with the jewelry that they designed.”
Judging criteria was based on the practicality of creating the piece, Ellis’ ability to create the jewelry exactly as the child designed it without sacrificing intent, usability/wearability and creativity.
Locally owned and operated since 1953, Ellis Jewelers hope to partner with local schools to make the future jewelry designer contest an annual event.
