RAPAPORT... Jewelry designers in the Middle East have until October 15, 2011, to submit their original designs for the third annual "Jewellery Design Awards." The annual competition will recognize winning designs during Dubai International Jewellery Week, which takes place November 10 through 13.
The competition is open to anyone in the Middle East, older than 17, and is divided into three categories: Amateurs and students, professionals, and companies. Entrants can submit a maximum of three designs from a choice of six jewelry types such as rings, necklaces, pendants, brooches, bracelets and earrings.
Trixee Loh, the senior vice president of Dubai World Trade Centre, explained, ''Our aim is to highlight outstanding design talent among established companies and professional designers, but also support the next generation of jewelry designers to establish themselves within the industry.''
The Jewelry Design Awards 2011 will crown a designer of the year, pick the most innovative company, and select the best jewelry marketing campaign.
Submissions will be evaluated by professionals from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the National Institute of Vocational Studies, the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, the Dubai Women’s Establishment and Arabian Woman magazine. Entries will be assessed on their originality, the creativity and innovation that is embodied in the design and the wear-ability of the finished product. Submissions from companies will also be judged on their ability to understand and reflect consumer tastes in their designs.
Dubai International Jewellery Week will be celebrating its sixteenth edition in November and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors. The show is organized by the Dubai World Trade Centre and the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre and sponsored by Rosy Blue. Organizers expect more than 300 exhibitors will take part.
This year, the event introduces the Pearl Lounge and the ''ultra-premium'' Boutique Boulevard, featuring luxury jewelry, and the Diamond World section that is dedicated to loose diamonds and diamond jewelry.
Dubai International Jewellery Week will also host a series of seminars and workshops, including a two-day seminar hosted by the GIA, discussing the latest regional market trends and opportunities.
Loh said, ''Exhibitors from around the world bring the widest selection of rare and popular precious metals, gemstones, and finished jewelry to Dubai International Jewellery Week. We provide the perfect forum to connect leading jewelers and brands with a highly discerning and well developed regional target market.''
Exhibitor Amit Dhamani, the chief executive of Dhamani Jewels, said, ''We have participated at the Dubai International Jewellery Week for 10 years and are delighted to be doing so once again. Dhamani Jewels is renowned for its exquisite fine diamond and color stone jewelry collections, and we are recognized globally as one of the largest fine jewelry retail groups in the region. We are anticipating keen interest for our collections at this year’s show.''
Rihen Mehta, the executive director of Rosy Blue, added, ''We have participated at the Dubai International Jewellery Week since its first edition. Dubai is a strategic location catering to nearly three billion people within a radius of five hours flying time, and participating at this event means that we reach a considerable segment of our global customer base. Rosy Blue will be showcasing a full range of products and we expect a record event this year.''
